The HSI School of Discipleship

The HSI School of Discipleship is a structured program intended to help people on the journey of discipleship that all Christians are called to travel. It begins with an introductory retreat held over three evenings called the Discipleship Program, which is then followed by two-three hour sessions once a week in the School. Participants are required to live the lessons they learn in a communal atmosphere.

The Discipleship Program, which is the introductory module to the School of Discipleship, has been held in over a hundred parishes in several countries over the world. It has proved to a powerful program, not only transforming the lives of those who have attended, but empowering them to take the gospel message to others.

Lessons - Scripture Study

We begin our Scripture Study with a study of the book of Acts, also referred to as the book of the Holy Spirit. Written by Luke, Paul's physician companion, and a sequel to his first book, which we call the gospel of Luke, the book of Acts serves as a bridge for the writings of the New Testament.

Luke begins this book by alluding to his first book, then briefly reviews the events that took place between the resurrection and ascension of Jesus. He talks about the promise of the Father concerning His Holy Spirit, who would empower them to be witnesses to the ends of the earth. Also described is the ascension of Jesus and the promise of His return. In obedience to His command, the apostles return to Jerusalem, where they wait and pray for the fulfilment of this promise.

During this time, Peter speaks to the 120 disciples about Judas and taking a replacement for him. Two men are considered worthy for the post and following a drawing of lots, Matthias is finally selected to be one of the twelve.

As you study this chapter, consider the following questions as an aid to gaining a better understanding of it. Put yourself in the place of the disciples.

  1. Who was Luke? What did he write about in his first book (Luke’s Gospel)? Who was Theophilus, whom he addresses in both books? Compare both the dedications.
  2. In Acts 1:3 we see Jesus, after his resurrection, presenting himself alive to the apostles by many “convincing proofs”. Why did Jesus need to prove that he was alive? What are some of these proofs recorded elsewhere in Scripture? What does the Church teach about these matters?
  3. In Acts 1:4, the risen Jesus instructs the disciples to wait for the promise of the Father. What is the “promise of the Father”?
  4. In Acts 1:6, the disciples ask Jesus if the time had come for the restoration of the Kingdom of Israel. What ideas did the disciples have about the Kingdom of God? What did Jesus tell them in reply? What does the Church say about the establishment of the Kingdom and when it will occur?
  5. In Acts 1:8, Jesus says: “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth.” Why did they need the Holy Spirit? What does it mean to be a witness? Why did Jesus refer to the three lands and the ends of the earth? What does the Church say about being a witness?
  6. In Acts 1:9, we see Jesus being lifted up into heaven. Why did Jesus ascend this way? Why did Jesus leave them instead of staying to help them? Is there any significance to the mention of the cloud that “took him out of their sight”?
  7. In Acts 1:11 we see two men in white robes suddenly appearing and telling them that “Jesus, who has been taking up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” Who were the two men? What other information do we have about Christ’s return? What does the Church say we can expect on the last day?
  8. In Acts 1:12 we see the apostles praying in the upper room of the house in which they were living. In what circumstance of importance has this upper room been used before? What were the disciples praying for?
  9. In Acts 1:15-26 we see several significant things happening. What are they? Why were lots cast to select a replacement for Judas?
